Throughout the last couple of years, Arsenal have been a victim to injuries. In what already was a position with major doubts and reservations after Granit Xhaka put an end to the speculation regarding his departure, we are back in square one as medical reports informed that the Swiss captain had a torn medial collateral ligament (MCL).
The timeframe for his return is around 8-10 weeks, certainly, an absence that will be felt given that Thomas Partey will be the only starting-quality midfielder available for that extended period of time. I do not even want to mention that the Ghanaian has had an incredibly tough time with injuries as well.
This summer, Arsenal decided to sign Albert Sambi Lokonga from Anderlecht. Although, he has impressed both fans and manager, it would be too early to give him all the responsibilities of midfield.
In deadline day, Ainsley Maitland-Niles was retained by Mikel Arteta even though he openly expressed his desire to leave as Everton were seeking a loan move for his services. Finally, Mohamed Elneny adds another option as he is in the final year of his contract at the Emirates. I think it is fair to say that Arsenal have two options. Rely on the available players and risk it or go find a long-term solution in the transfer market in January.
Who could the club sign in the Winter transfer window?
#1. Bruno Guimaraes: The Lyon midfielder is a player that has been linked to Arsenal for a while now. I am sure many can recall that in December 2019, rumors started surfacing that the club were keen on striking a deal with Athletico Paranaense for his signature but it was Juninho and Lyon who acted faster.
Now, after a couple of years in Europe, the Brazilian is ready to make a jump and why not Arsenal? After a few reliable links came out this summer, his camp admitted that they were waiting for a call from the Gunners. This winter could be the perfect opportunity to sign him to solve the ongoing issues in midfield.
#2. Franck Kessie: With less than one year left on his contract, the Ivorian would be a perfect opportunity for any team looking for a midfielder.
The 24 year-old has consistently been one of the best in the Serie A and he will not be short of suitors. Although, he is very similar to Thomas Partey, he prefers the left side of midfield making it easier for them to gel if they create a potential partnership.
It would take a minimal fee to sign him in January, so it will be a very shrewd deal to complete.
A Hale End option
Charlie Patino has impressed many with his intelligence and talent, but it will be another question if he is given the opportunity to play Premier League football. At such a young age, he is being touted as the best talent ever produced in the academy, but we have to be careful. At the age of 17, it will take him time to adapt and Arsenal don’t have time to risk in their endless search to get back to Champions League Football.
There will be a huge decision to be made in January, no doubt.
